Photography

Photography
July 21-26
Grades 9-12

When it comes to photography gone are the days of ‘point and shoot.’ With all of today’s new technology and cameras smarter than some phones it’s hard to maintain knowledge and perfect the art of photography. That’s where Superior Edventures comes in to help. Our campers get a chance to explore their passion for photography here in the beautiful Upper Peninsula. Several unique photojournalism opportunities are presented during our crash course week. Students are given a chance to photograph waterfalls, wildlife, and so much more here in the area surrounding Sault Ste. Marie. In order to get the perfect shot campers are taught the dynamics of their cameras, lighting effects, and we strive for proficient understanding on aperture and shutter settings. Some time will be spent working with editing software so students can perfect the shots they have. This week long camp strives to give students a hands on chance to improve their passion. So if you’ve got a little shutterbug who’s just dying to learn more and want to give them a chance to get the perfect ‘Pure Michigan’ shot, look no further than Superior Edventures’ Photography Camp. Fire Science Camp

Fire Science Camp
July 14-19
Grades 9-12
Often times when asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” many kids respond with “firefighter.” Our Fire Science camp allows kids to live out that dream and gain a better understanding of the inner workings of being a firefighter. Our nationally recognized program here on campus makes for a great opportunity for campers to dive into the world of fire science and experience many things first hand for the first time. Early on the camp focuses on the science behind fire and gives campers an education on what they will be experiencing in the field. They learn about different fire protection systems, how they work, and what to do if they fail. With the continuing trend of firefighters working as emergency medical technicians our campers learn the basics of CPR and how to use external defibrillator. A section of their time is devoted to learning about wild land fires and the science behind them, giving them a well rounded understanding of different elements of firefighting.  Campers get the opportunity to dawn LSSU provided fire gear and run drills along side professionals in the field. One camper who experienced the Fire Science camps two years in a row in now employed at a fire station down state “Without the Fire Science camp I probably never would have thought about entering this field. I was thinking about a medical degree and the possibility of working in an ER, but after camp that all changed. Everything I experienced at camp stuck with me and I changed my plans for my future. Without the camp I wouldn’t have the job I have today and I wouldn’t be a student in the Fire Science field.” The hands on learning, games and drills, and focus on the science behind it all is what makes our Fire Science camp so exciting. As with many of camps we hope to take kid’s preexisting passions and turn them into a promising future.

Biomedical Science Camp

Biomedical Science Camp
June 21-26
Grades 9-12

Here at Superior Edventures we like to make sure that when our campers leave they don’t just leave with awesome memories made, but with new knowledge as well. Our Biomedical Science campers get a chance to work in Lake State’s state of the art science labs. For an entire week they are able to immerse themselves in opportunities to learn. By designing a camp around Biomedical Science we allow kids who have an interest in science, medicine, and health to get a look at what the field entails. Possibly a peak into what their futures may be as college students.  With five days featuring ten different lab activities our campers get a crash course in some of the major elements of Biomedical Science. We seek to teach our campers the main principles of how the human body works and allow them to do their own biomedical research. From DNA extraction to blood typing our campers do it all with the assistance of professors and Lake State students. They are able to participate in dissections and learn anatomy first hand. Also, our campers learn about the different fields pertaining to biomedical science and the education and training needed to work in those professions. We hope that by attending the camp and experiencing the hands on learning that we offer it will spark a passion that will guide our campers towards their futures. Perhaps by attending our Biomedical Science camp they will discover where they want to go with their futures and become heroes in biomedical fields.

Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Science Camp

Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Science Camp
July 14-19
Grades 9-12

Our Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Science Camp takes full advantage of the geography of the area surrounding Sault Ste. Marie. Campers get the opportunity to learn through experience along side Lake State professors in the many rivers and creeks surrounding our area of the Upper Peninsula. Our campers get a hands on look at different aquatic ecosystems and learn what differentiates them. In previous years night time herping has been a popular activity for these campers. They set out to collect reptiles and amphibians to later study in the lab. After their days out in the field collecting samples they return to our science labs to start identifying their samples and collecting data. It allows campers to take what is seen in the field and start making academic connections through hands on study.  The camp culminates on the final day when campers get the opportunity to present their findings in presentations. As the campers stand before their friends and families they have a wealth of new knowledge and information. As the presentations take place family members are encouraged to ask questions which the campers have no problem answering. Thanks to their hands on learning and help from Lake State professors they have a weeks worth of new knowledge to apply. Many parents are impressed with their children’s grasp of the new information they’ve learned. One camper attributes her knew skills and know how to her time spent out in the field “If you’d been in the water with us you’d understand, I didn’t understand until I saw it.” That’s the great thing about our Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Science Camp and all of our camps here at Superior Edventures, hands on learning helps establish knowledgeable connections and our campers leave not have just learned something, they leave having experienced something.

Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor Adventures Camp:
July 21-26
Grades 6-8
Who doesn’t love a good adventure? Perhaps a walk in the woods, a lazy day canoeing on a river, or rock climbing in the summer sun, all that and more makes up our Outdoor Adventure camps. When asked what they did in Outdoor Adventure Camp during the week one camper simply responded with “A lot!” That’s a pretty good summary of what goes on in our Outdoor Adventure Camps. Outdoor Adventures is all about having fun and creating awesome summer memories. We strive for hands on learning through team building experiences and fun activities. Set in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula our campers get a chance to explore the woods, hiking trails, and waters surrounding Sault Ste. Marie.  While hiking through the woods and enjoying the summer sun our campers are taught about the flora and fauna that make up the area around them. They do compass orienteering and learn how to use compasses to navigate.  They canoe the ‘Whiskey River’ along side Lake State professors and students taking in the beautiful summer sunshine while learning teamwork skills. On the days when they don’t have large fieldtrips planned they enjoy some of the fun outdoor activities available here on the Lake State campus. They are able to take full advantage of our disc golf course, lounge in the afternoon sun learning to make survival bracelets, and learn to do rope knots.   The fun and sun of the camp all culminate on the final day when the campers get to go rock climbing and repelling. They spend several hours the day before learning about the basics of climbing and repelling and are able to get hands on training before heading out to the final field trip. However, even with all the preparation some campers still find themselves a little nervous when the day comes to climb and repel.  A testament to the bonds created at camp, one camper last year expressed fear when it came to the final day and her fellow camp member threw her arm around her friend’s shoulder and said “don’t worry we’ll all be there and we will do it together.” Fun, friendship, teamwork, and more all culminate in our Outdoor Adventures camp.
