Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Science Camp
July 14-19
Grades 9-12
Our Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries Science Camp takes full advantage of the geography of the area surrounding Sault Ste. Marie. Campers get the opportunity to learn through experience along side Lake State professors in the many rivers and creeks surrounding our area of theUpper Peninsula .
Our campers get a hands on look at different aquatic ecosystems and learn what
differentiates them. In previous years night time herping has been a popular activity for these campers. They set out
to collect reptiles and amphibians to later study in the lab. After their days
out in the field collecting samples they return to our science labs to start
identifying their samples and collecting data. It allows campers to take what
is seen in the field and start making academic connections through hands on
study. The camp culminates on the final
day when campers get the opportunity to present their findings in
presentations. As the campers stand before their friends and families they have
a wealth of new knowledge and information. As the presentations take place
family members are encouraged to ask questions which the campers have no
problem answering. Thanks to their hands on learning and help from Lake State
professors they have a weeks worth of new knowledge to apply. Many parents are
impressed with their children’s grasp of the new information they’ve learned.
One camper attributes her knew skills and know how to her time spent out in the
field “If you’d been in the water with us you’d understand, I didn’t understand
until I saw it.” That’s the great thing about our Aquatic Ecology & Fisheries
Science Camp and all of our camps here at Superior Edventures, hands on
learning helps establish knowledgeable connections and our campers leave not
have just learned something, they leave having experienced something.
