Fire Science Camp
July 14-19
Grades 9-12

Often times when asked “What do you want to be when you grow up?” many kids respond with “firefighter.” Our Fire Science camp allows kids to live out that dream and gain a better understanding of the inner workings of being a firefighter. Our nationally recognized program here on campus makes for a great opportunity for campers to dive into the world of fire science and experience many things first hand for the first time. Early on the camp focuses on the science behind fire and gives campers an education on what they will be experiencing in the field. They learn about different fire protection systems, how they work, and what to do if they fail. With the continuing trend of firefighters working as emergency medical technicians our campers learn the basics of CPR and how to use external defibrillator. A section of their time is devoted to learning about wild land fires and the science behind them, giving them a well rounded understanding of different elements of firefighting.  Campers get the opportunity to dawn LSSU provided fire gear and run drills along side professionals in the field. One camper who experienced the Fire Science camps two years in a row in now employed at a fire station down state “Without the Fire Science camp I probably never would have thought about entering this field. I was thinking about a medical degree and the possibility of working in an ER, but after camp that all changed. Everything I experienced at camp stuck with me and I changed my plans for my future. Without the camp I wouldn’t have the job I have today and I wouldn’t be a student in the Fire Science field.” The hands on learning, games and drills, and focus on the science behind it all is what makes our Fire Science camp so exciting. As with many of camps we hope to take kid’s preexisting passions and turn them into a promising future.
