Outdoor Adventures

Outdoor Adventures Camp:
July 21-26
Grades 6-8
Who doesn’t love a good adventure? Perhaps a walk in the woods, a lazy day canoeing on a river, or rock climbing in the summer sun, all that and more makes up our Outdoor Adventure camps. When asked what they did in Outdoor Adventure Camp during the week one camper simply responded with “A lot!” That’s a pretty good summary of what goes on in our Outdoor Adventure Camps. Outdoor Adventures is all about having fun and creating awesome summer memories. We strive for hands on learning through team building experiences and fun activities. Set in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula our campers get a chance to explore the woods, hiking trails, and waters surrounding Sault Ste. Marie.  While hiking through the woods and enjoying the summer sun our campers are taught about the flora and fauna that make up the area around them. They do compass orienteering and learn how to use compasses to navigate.  They canoe the ‘Whiskey River’ along side Lake State professors and students taking in the beautiful summer sunshine while learning teamwork skills. On the days when they don’t have large fieldtrips planned they enjoy some of the fun outdoor activities available here on the Lake State campus. They are able to take full advantage of our disc golf course, lounge in the afternoon sun learning to make survival bracelets, and learn to do rope knots.   The fun and sun of the camp all culminate on the final day when the campers get to go rock climbing and repelling. They spend several hours the day before learning about the basics of climbing and repelling and are able to get hands on training before heading out to the final field trip. However, even with all the preparation some campers still find themselves a little nervous when the day comes to climb and repel.  A testament to the bonds created at camp, one camper last year expressed fear when it came to the final day and her fellow camp member threw her arm around her friend’s shoulder and said “don’t worry we’ll all be there and we will do it together.” Fun, friendship, teamwork, and more all culminate in our Outdoor Adventures camp.
